She was the daughter of Jeptha Columbus and Mary Jane (Riddle) Austell. Mary J. had first married a Mr. Watkins and had children with him. I assume Mr. Watkins died soon into their marriage and she then married Jeptha Columbus Austell - 29 Jul 1868 - Jackson Co., Alabama. By 1895, Mary J. (Riddle) Watkins Austell was dead and Jeptha Columbus Austell then married Elizabeth Jane Powers - 24 Mar 1895 - Jackson Co., Alabama. The family ended up in Ellis Co., Texas.
Mary Lee Austell, the subject of this memorial, first married Henderson Ambrose "Hence" Shelton - 04 Dec 1884 - Lincoln Co., Tennessee. Later, she married Hiram William Metcalf - 14 Jan 1917 - Lincoln Co., Tennessee.

Funeral Services Held For Mrs. Metcalf --
Mrs. Mary Shelton Metcalf, age 88, died Sunday morning, December 14, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dave Tucker, after an illness of several years. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted at the Gum Springs Church in Lincoln County by the Rev. Frank Hirlston.
She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Fannie Sullenger of Lexie Cross Roads, Mrs. Pearl Couch of Tullahoma, Mrs. Lavert Plattenberg of Winchester, and Mrs. Dave Tucker of Harmony; a son, Alton Shelton of Flintville; 27 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
