U.S. Congressman. While engaged in mercantile pursuits, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Newark Valley, New York. He served as Postmaster of Newark Valley, (1838 to 1866) and as Newark Valley Justice of the Peace, (1852 to 1855). In 1867, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress, serving until 1869. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C., until his death.
