(1855 - 1953)

John Gospodarek, 98 (above) of 1326 South 18th St., Manitowoc, one of the oldest residents of Manitowoc, died Tuesday morning at the home.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Leschke Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. John Landowski will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was born in Posen, Germany, now Poland, in 1855 and in his early life worked as a farm hand. At the age of 22 years he entered the German army and shortly after being mustered out married Miss Helen Revolinsky. The couple with their children came to Manitowoc in 1891. He was first employed on a Meeme farm and in 1893 entered the employ of the Reiss Coal Company. He continued in this job until retiring 30 years ago. He was a member of the Holy Name Society. Mrs. Gospodarek died 23 years ago.

Survivors are three sons, Michael, John Jr., and Joseph of Manitowoc; brother, Wenzel of Milwaukee; 24 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Friends may call at the funeral home after Wednesday noon where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
