4-Year-Old Boy Drowns After Falling From Dock
Michael Heili of Manitowoc Dies in River
Was Playing With 2 Others Sunday Evening

MANITOWOC—
Michael Heili, four year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Heili, 925-A S. 20th St., drowned Sunday evening after he fell off a dock into the Manitowoc River while playing with two companions.

The tragedy occurred about 7 p.m. at a point about 100 feet east of the 16th Street guard house of Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. City police did not learn of the drowning until more than an hour after it occurred. The body was recovered shortly before 8:45 p.m. from 20 to 25 feet of water just off the dock.

It was the first death by drowning reported in Manitowoc County so far this year.

Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen, who investigated, said the Heili family had gone for a visit to the Harry McKinnon residence at 1714 Wollmer St. After supper the Heili youngster went out to play with Jo McKinnon and his friend, Jerry Nickels, of 625 S. 19th St. Both of the other boys are nine years old.

Trying to Recover Floats
The boys wound up at the dock area and were attempting to retrieve three stray fishing floats when the Heili youngster toppled into the deep water. McKinnon and Nickels said they tried to hand him a stick but could not reach him as he floated out about 1-1/2 yards from the dock. The dock is set about six feet above the water's edge at that point.

After the incident, the other two boys returned to the McKinnon home about three blocks away but said nothing about the youngster's disappearance, Doctor Teitgen related. When questioned 10 or 15 minutes later, they reportedly said that he was coming along later.

A search of the neighborhood was then undertaken by the parents and after it proved futile the McKinnon boy admitted to his father that the boy had fallen into the water, Doctor Teitgen said.

The boys apparently became frightened and were afraid to tell about the incident. McKinnon informed police shortly after 8 p.m. and the police boat was sent to undertake dragging operations. The Coast Guard station at Two Rivers was also notified but its services were not required.

In Junior Kindergarten
The boy was born in the city Sept. 6, 1953, and was a junior kindergarten student at Cleveland School. His mother is the former Irene Brull.

Surviving in addition to the parents are a brother, Patrick, at home, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Heili, of Two Rivers; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Brull, and the great-maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Brull, of Manitowoc; and the great-great maternal grandfather, Gabriel Brull, of Hays, Kans.

Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Urbanek and Shclei Fuenral home and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward Nowakowski will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 o'clock this Monday evening where the Rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock.
