He is the son of Rev. James and Jane Mercer-Moody.
Thomas' mother Jane, was the granddaughter of Nicholas Mercer, Revolutionary Soldier "born 1738, who served in Virginia and died in Wayne County, Kentucky in 1816."

"Thomas married Eliza Wright of Wayne Co., Kentucky, on June 12, 1845, the daughter of Summers and Naomi Coffey Wright. To Thomas and Eliza were born 9 children: Summers W., John P., Marcus C., Thomas A., James, Stephen D., William A., Nicholas M., and Mary J. (Mrs. Frank Chapman)."
