Mr. Watkins was born on July 27, 1928 in Greensboro, son of the late Samuel, Sr. and Myrtle Melvin Watkins. A U.S. Navy veteran, he retired in 1995 as a substance abuse counselor with Alcohol and Drug Services of Guilford County. He spent 40 years helping people regain their lives. He attended Proximity Methodist Church.

Survivors include three children, Richard W. Watkins and wife Debra of Greensboro, Samuel G. Watkins, III of Greensboro and Connie Sue Pegram and husband Steve of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Dorothy Wilson of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Paul and Joseph Watkins of Greensboro and Matthew Pegram of Jacksonville, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
