Graduate of the University of Virginia; Attorney; Judge; Major, Judge Advocate in the Confederate Army; brother of Brigadier General Seth M. Barton; son of Thomas Bowerbank Barton, a prominent Fredericksburg citizen and owner of the Fredericksburg Masonic Cemetery.

Residence 904 Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg VA; lawyer.
In 1861 he was Major of the 2nd Battalion Virginia Volunteers, which became Company A "Washington Guards", and Company B "Fredericksburg Grays" of the 30th Virginia Infantry.
5/1861 Acting Assistant Adjudant General to General Ruggles.
6/14/1861 assigned by Robert E. Lee as Major, 26th Virginia Infantry; this order was modified, assigning him again to the 30th Virginia, with rank to date 5/17/1861.
12/1861 thru 1/1862 detached service with 2 Companies in Fredericksburg, Va.
3/1862 Detached service as Judge Advocate.
He was dropped on 4/18/1862 at re-organization of the Regiment.
Assigned to prominent role in the Advocate Inspector General's Office in Richmond, Va. for the rest of the war.
Postwar he was a Judge in Fredericksburg, Va.
Died in the same house he was born.

The 30th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in June, 1861. Men of this unit were from Fredericksburg and the counties of Spotsylvania, Caroline, Stafford, and King George.
