Major John Archbold, 40, of 4 Chestnut St., Marblehead, a 17-year veteran of the Marine Corps, has been killed in action in Vietnam.

His wife, Jacqueline (McCarthy), had recently returned from Hawaii where she spent a week with her husband while he was on rest and rehabilitation leave from Vietnam.

The major was shot down June 7 while flying a helicopter on a resupplying mission in Quang Nam Providence.

A father of three, his college term was interrupted when he was activated in the reserves for service in Korea. He graduated from St. John's College, Brooklyn, N.Y., and received his marine wings at Corpus Christi, Tex.

Assigned to Vietnam Nov. 23, 1968, he was the commanding officer of a helicopter unit.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mary, 14, Jane, 12, son, Christopher, 6, his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Christopher Archibold of Flushing, N.Y.; two sisters, Rosemary and Kathleen, and a brother, Thomas, all of Long Island, N.Y.
