William McGuire Hughes was the son of William Caspar Hughes and Matilda (Hulda) Moss. He was born in August, 1854 in Murphy's Camp, California. He moved to Los Angeles where he met and married Sarah Ann Brooks, who lived on the Brooks Ranch in Los Angeles. William co-owned a grocery store on Downey Avenue in East Los Angeles, "under the electric light mast", one of the first street lights in Los Angeles.
William McGuire Hughes and Sarah Ann Brooks had three children:
William Ashton Hughes - son
Ivy Ethel Hughes - daughter
Anna Fern Hughes - daughter
William and Sarah are buried side by side at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California.
