The sudden death of Mrs. S. O. Wagenius last Thursday evening came as a shock to the entire community. She had been in her usual good health when on Sunday evening she was taken severely ill with an attack of acute appendicitis and an immediate operation was deemed necessary. She rallied from the operation in fine condition when on Wednesday afternoon peritonitis set in. Everything was done in an effort to save her life but of no avail. She passed away peacefully at St. Luke's Hospital on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., retaining consciousness until the last.
Mrs. S. O. Wagenius, whose maiden name was Betsy Hagman, was born in Funnesdalen, Harjadalen, Sweden, July 28, 1858. When two years old she came to this country with her parents, Olof Ingebretson and Mary Hagman, in the year 1860 and located at White Rock, Goodhue Co., Minnesota. In 1881 she was married to S. O. Wagenius and moved to Holmes City, which has since been her home. This union was blessed with five children, four of whom together with her husband remain to mourn their loss. The children are: Carl O., Mrs. J. E. Backlin, Ruth and Reuben. One daughter, Mary, having died seven years ago. She also leaves five brothers and three sisters: Andrew of Argusville, N. D., Peter, John, Henry and Olof of White Rock, Minn., Mrs. J. P. Holm, Farwell, Minn., Mrs. Claud Lind, Minneapolis and Mrs. Christine Fjerstad of Red Wing, Minn., also two grandchildren, Rodney and Helen Marie Backlin.
Short funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and from the Swedish Lutheran church, which was filled to its utmost capacity, at 2:30; Rev. A. Mattson of Alexandria and Rev. E. M. Eriksson of Evansville, her former pastor, officiating. Rev. Eriksson spoke feelingly of her life in the home as a devoted and loving mother and expressed words of comfort to the sorrowing family. Rev. Mattson chose as his text, the passage: "In my Father's house there are many mansions", and also read a poem which he had composed in memory of the deceased. The choir sang several beautiful songs and Miss Sara Ekman gave a solo and Misses Ruth Anderson and Marie Bjorkman, duets. At the cemetery Rev Mattson read a poem which Rev. Eriksson had composed and as the casket was lowered into the grave the choir sang, "Nearer My God to Thee." The pallbearers were old friends of the family: John Backelin, John Bergstrom, Eric Johnson, N.G. Nelson, N. H Johanson and P. M. Hjelm.
