Fielena was born to Ruth E Richardson and Eugene J Ambeau. She was later legally adopted by her stepfather and changed her last name to Saulsbury. She moved to Palmer, Alaska with her family and attended Palmer High School where she met her husband, Elden Sandvik. They had three sons, Dale, Dan and David. Together they have 9 grandchildren: Elijah, Andrew, Anthony, Felicia, Mariah, Jacob, Travis, David Jr. and Matthew Sandvik.
