Son of Theresa (Tucker) Merrigan
Graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1945
Served as a US Army military police offer in Europe from 1945 to 1947.
He met Marguerite at age 13 and married her on 19 April 1948.
In 1948, started as a newspaper reporter for the Greenfield Recorder; he held this post for 22 years.
In the 1970s, he and Marguerite started Merrigan Real Estate.
He was elected in 1970 as the first Democrat to hold county-wide office in Franklin County.
In 1976, he enrolled in University of Massachusetts and graduated in 1978. He then enrolled in Western New England College, School of Law. On 15 December 1982, he was sworn in as a member of the Massachusetts Bar. From 1982 to 2011 he practiced law in Franklin & Hampshire counties, served as assistant clerk of the Superior Court and assistant district attorney
In 2012, he published "Remembering Hannah" about his mother-in-law's emigration to America as a teenager, and "Sugarloaf Street, A Memoir, about his childhood in South Deerfield.
He was predeceased by his borthers Francis and Raymond, a daughter Patricia Jeanne Merrigan in 2011, and two grandchildren Karalyn Niedbala and Emily Marguerite Chabot.
He is survived by 3 sons, 4 daughters, 26 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
