H. MACLACHLAN
DEAD, AGED 92

Was Elkhart’s Oldest Busi-
ness Man; Founded ‘Mac
the Fair.’

Death came to Elkhart’s old-
est business man – Hugh Mac-
Lachlan, aged 92 years last Nov.
15 – at 12:30 this morning, after
an illness that prostrated him
seven weeks ago. His death oc-
curred at the home of his daugh-
ter, Mrs Elizabeth Bell, and her
husband, John H. Bell, 226 ½
South Main street.
Seventy years ago Mr. Mac-
Lachlan, who had learned the
harnessmaker’s trade in his na-
tive Canada, came to Elkhart
and opened a shop. This was
in a little frame building on the
site of the business block now
at 206 South Main, only a few
doors distant from Mr. Mac-
Lachlan’s last residence.
‘Mac the Fair’
Twelve years later, in 1878,
he sold the business, and, with
the late Norris E. Felt, estab-
lished “The Fair” variety store;
in 1881 he bought Mr. Felt’s in-
terest. His retirement began
with his sale of the variety store
32 years ago to Ziesel Bros.
then first organized.
For 11 years after this sale,
Mr. MacLachlan and his sec-
ond wife, Richenda Wood Mac-

Lachlan, lived in Miami, Fla.,
but they returned to Elkhart for
a stay of five years, making an-
other stay in Florida before their
final return to Elkhart. Since
the death of his mate, in 1928,
Mr. MacLachlan had made his
home with Mr. and Mrs. Bell.
Surviving beside Mr. and Mrs.
Bell are the following grand-
children: J. Mackie Bell of
Cleveland, O., Hugh and Billy
Bell of Elkhart; Donald Mac-
Lachlan of Elkhart and Hugh
MacLachlan IV of Gary. Mrs.
Bell in the daughter of Mr. Mac-
Lachlan’s first wife, Vibilia, who
died in 1897.
Long-Lived Family
Mr. MacLachlan’s parents –
Hugh and Elizabeth – came to
America from Scotland a few
years before his birth on Nov.
15, 1844, at Richmond Hill, near
Toronto. The father, a tailor,
lived to the age of 89, and the
mother survived to the age of
96. Both lived in Elkhart for
two years in the latter ‘70s be-
for returning to Canada.
Mr. MacLachlan witnessed and
had a part in the development
of Elkhart from a country town
of 3,000 people. When he came
here, there was not a paved
street, hardly a wooden cross
walk, no fire department, no
waterworks, no gas or electric
or telephone service.
He was an early member of
Kane lodge of Free and Accept-
ed Masons and in 1884 a charter
member of Elkhart commandery
of Knights Templar. He also
was a member of the Knights of
the Maccabees and the order of
Elks.
The funeral of Mr. MacLach-
lan will be held Tuesday. The
service will be conducted at 3
p. m. at the Dale White chapel,
129 South Second street, in
charge of a reader of the Chris-
tian Scientist church. Burial
will be in Grace Lawn cemetery.
