Obituary:

ALVIN MARVIN KINSLOW
Aug. 23, 1915-Jan. 22, 2012

Alvin Marvin Kinslow, 96, Preston, was born Aug. 23, 1915, southwest of Urbana, the son of Joseph and Allie Mae (Dryer) Kinslow. He died Jan. 22, 2012, at St. John's Hospital, Springfield.

He was saved and baptized as a young man during a revival at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. His ancestors, Kinslow, Huckaby and Dryer families, settled in the area near Sentinel and Huckaby in the mid-1800s.

He was united in marriage with Lula Cornelia Armstrong on March 29, 1936, near Halfway. They moved to Santa Paula, Calif., in 1937, where he worked many years in the ranching and citrus industry.

His hobbies were beekeeping and raising avocados which he enjoyed greatly. His strong encouragement of education for his children, inspired by his saying many times to each, "Get an education," inspired his children to each earn a college degree and his eight grandchildren to earn college degrees. The legacy continued with one great-granddaughter having earned a degree and four great-grandchildren currently enrolled in college.

Upon retiring in 1979, after 27 years as a ranch foreman for the Reddick Ranch near Santa Paula, Calif., he and his wife retired to their home near Preston where he raised cattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 68 years, Lula, who died in 2004; brothers: Virgil, Thomas, John and an infant brother; sisters: Idra Percival and Helen Walker; and a son-in-law, Alvin R. Kugler.

Survivors include his children: Alice Mae Kugler, Cross Timbers, Linda and husband, Wilbur Bridges, Rogersville, Gene and wife, Naomi Kinslow, Fordland, and James Kinslow and Carol Foster, Ramona, Calif.; grandchildren: Roger Kugler, Cross Timbers, Alice Marie Bristow, Rome, Ga., Lee Bridges, Kansas City, Ben Bridges, Springfield, Andrew Kinslow, Fordland, Christopher Kinslow, Weston, Julie Mihata, Poway, Calif., and Kathryn Kinslow, San Diego, Calif.; 10 great-grandchildren: Jeddie Bristow, Columbus, Ga., Wendy Bristow, Rome, Ga., Amanda Pearce, and Zach, Austin and Carlyn Bridges, all of Kansas City, Charlie and Alex Kinslow, Weston, and Grace and Blake Mihata, Poway, Calif.; and a sister, Letha Cowell, Louisburg.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, southwest of Urbana, with Bro. Wayne Rash officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hopewell Cemetery in care of Cantlon Otterness Funeral Home of Buffalo.

Open viewing will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cantlon Otterness Chapel in Urbana. Family visitation is 9:30 a.m. to service time at the church. Online condolences may be made at www.cantlonotterness.com.
