He volunteered his services to the United States during the Spanish American War and served with General Merritt, Lesley, Merriam and Otis. His father was the first elected mayor of Albany, New York. His brother Henry, attempted to subdue John Wilkes Booth, after he had shot President Abraham Lincoln.
