Lauriston was listed as age 17 on the 1850 Howland, Trumball County, Ohio census with his parents and siblings. After the death of his mother, several of the family members were listed on the 1859 Kansas Territory Voter and Census list at Ottumwa in Coffey County. Lauriston was listed with a female next to Ulyssess Adgate, who was listed with a female and a child. Lauriston had settled in the Kansas Territory in December of 1857.

John H. Adgate was listed on the same voter and census page next to Mrs. Ferrill and her child. Sarah Farrell was a daughter of John H. Adgate. She was listed with a child named John Hart Farrell on the 1860 Coffey County, Kansas Territory census with John H. Adgate. She had also been listed on the 1850 Trumbull County, Ohio census with the family.

Lauriston moved to Phillips County, Arkansas and Ulysses returned to Ohio. Lauriston enlisted in Co. G, 5th Kansas Volunteer Regiment on 20 Oct 1862. He was listed as a resident of Helena in the enlistment record, where he was listed as a brick maker on the 1860 census. Civil War records state that he served in the 5th Kansas Cavalry and did not survive the war. His death is listed in the fall of 1863. One record lists his death in October and one lists his death in September at the general hospital in Helena, Arkansas. (Ancestry Civil War records)

Sarah L. Adgate received a widow's pension, and there was also a pension granted for the minor children of Lauriston Adgate. Nancy A. Adgate was born in Arkansas ca. 1862 and Lauriston Adgate, Jr., was born in Wisconsin ca. 1863. John W. Charitan was listed as the guardian on the pension record. Sarah was a daughter of William & Ann Lapham, both born in England. They are buried in Saint Croix County, Wisconsin. Sarah (nee Lapham) Adgate remarried to J. H. Charitan.
