John Dobson
ABILENE - John Ten Eyck Dobson, 74, of Abilene, a longtime Parsons resident, died at 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, at Enterprise Estates Nursing Center in Enterprise. He had been in failing health the past several months. He was born Aug. 15, 1931, in Schell City, Mo., to Claude B. and Delores (Daily) Dobson. He moved with his family to Parsons in 1942 and graduated from Parsons High School. He joined the Navy as a seaman in the early 1950s and was proud of his service. He was honorably discharged. He, as his father, was a painter by trade. After working for various contractors, he went to work for Parsons State Hospital and Training Center in 1962, and retired from there as paint shop foreman in 1996 after 34 years of service. He said he had a lot of friends there, and he's never forgotten them. He was a lifelong duck hunter and his life revolved around that pursuit. He spent many a winter morning in a duck blind, and until recently he never missed a season. He enjoyed woodworking. He was also interested in World War II history and read a great deal about it. He married Susan Haynes on June 19, 1955, in Emporia. She preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 1985. He married Ernestine (Toody) Jackson on March 3, 1986. She survives of the home in Abilene. Survivors include a son, Joseph E. Dobson of Parsons; three stepchildren, Kay Berven and her husband, Denny, and John R. Jackson, all of Abilene, and Doug Jackson and his wife, Dawna, of Parker, Colo.; eight stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, R.J. Dobson and his wife, Dorothy, of Pasadena, Texas; a niece, Charis Yaklin and her husband, Eddie, of Kingsville, Texas; and one nephew, Terry Dobson and his wife, Carol, of Rosharon, Texas. The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Lawn Cemetery Patio with the Rev. Leroy Foreman officiating and with the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, giving the military honors. Burial will follow in the veterans section of the cemetery. Friends may call at their convenience Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday morning at Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Memorials to American Cancer Society or to Dickinson County Home Hospice may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, P.O. Box 942, Parsons, 67357.
