He began his working life as a clerk in a dry goods store in Madison, Indiana. By 1866 he was studying law in the office of Hon. Stephen W. Fulton.
In May 1868 he was admitted to the bar. In March 1869 he formed a partnership with David A. Scott who had recently retired from the office of Surrogate. The firm was successful from the beginning and continued for more than 20 years.
In 1875 he was elected Special County Judge for 3 years. From Jan 1890 he was the District Attorney of Orange Co., New York.
He married Elizabeth McAlles in 1878.
