George Dewey Edwards, 40, of 2408 Princeton, died Friday night, June 30, 1939. He was born near Rusk, Texas on April 25, 1899.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and joined the Houston Police Department on June 17, 1927. He had been a resident of Houston for 13 years. He was shot and killed IN THE LINE OF DUTY as a Houston Police Officer.
He is survived by his wife Audie Edwards; a daughter Mrs. Kathryn Farmer; son Kenneth Edwards; grandson Thomas Farmer all of Houston; parents Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Edwards of Rusk; brothers J. B. and Frances of Dallas, Bill and Charlie Edwards of Rusk; sisters Mrs. Dora Berry and Mrs. Mack Dear of Rusk.
Funeral Services were held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 1939 at the Perry Foley Funeral Home with Rev. E. G. Gerheart officiating. The body was then sent by railroad overland to Jacksonville, Texas, at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, May 2, 1939.
Services were held in Dialville, Texas.
The burial followed at the Rocky Springs Cemetery at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, May 1, 1939.
Perry Foley Funeral Home were the local directors in Houston in charge of arrangements.
