Governor of New Jersey, 1913-1917. He was a two-time former Governor: as Senate President in 1913, he became Acting Governor when Woodrow Wilson resigned to become President. He resigned his State Senate seat while running for Governor several months later to avoid any challenges to the constitutional provision that Governors could not serve consecutive terms. Fielder left office in 1917 on bad terms with legislators from both parties and vowed never to become involved in partisan politics again. During World War I, Fielder served as state Food Administrator, and in 1919 began his 27-year tenure as a Judge.
