William Allen was born on July 8,1799 in Belfast, County Antrium, Ireland. He married Anna Jane Clark about 1827 in Ireland. In 1851 the family decided to come to the United States. The parents and six children boarded a sailing vessel in Belfast and after a voyage of six weeks on the ocean, they landed in New York City. They resided for a time in Brooklyn, New York and then moved to a farm near Versailles, Ohio. They were the parents of six children-James, William C., Mary Jane, John, Margaret Ann, and Ellen. William Allen became a naturalized citizen on October 4, 1859.
