Son of Noah and Mary E. (Redfield) Selleck. Before his third birthday, Charles lost his father —a casualty of the Civil War—and he and his mother resided with her parents until her remarriage (by 1869) to maltster John White.

Charles had worked as a haberdasher as well as a newspaperman for The Phelps Citizen before his unexpected death at the age of 28. The following obituary appeared in the Citizen of 21 Nov 1889:

C. L. SELLECK.
The announcement of the sudden death of Charles L. Selleck, shortly before noon on Friday of the last week, created a great deal of surprise from the fact that he had been seen about the streets all the morning on that day. About half past eleven o'clock he went to the home of his grandparents and going directly to his room, retired. A few moments afterwards his grandmother went to his room to call him to dinner and found him lying on the bed apparently dead. Dr. W. A. Howe was summoned and upon examination found no action of the heart whatever. He pronounced the cause of death paralysis of the heart. Mr. Selleck had for the past eight months been connected with the CITIZEN as local writer, in which capacity he proved himself a versatile and able writer, always expressing his views in a happy and good-natured vein which made him many warm friends. At the time of death he was 28 years of age. The funeral services were held at St. John's church last Sunday afternoon and were largely attended. Dr. Edson officiated and interment was made in the new Phelps cemetery.
