He was born May 1, 1938 in Greenville, Mississippi. He attended Mississippi State University on a football scholarship and graduated in 1960 with a B.S. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He moved to Helena, Arkansas in 1965 and became the operations manager for Helena Marine Service under Jim Walden. There he met his wife, Mary Ann, who he married the following year. In 1979 he left Helena Marine to form the Arkansas River Company in Greenville. He successfully ran this company for many years and also served on various committees of the American Waterways Operators, including the board of directors, and also served as the southern region chairman. After closing the company in 2002 he and Mary Ann retired to live between Greenville and Waveland. In Sept of 2005 Hurricane Katrina destroyed their Waveland residence and they purchased a condo in Starkville and split their time between there and Greenville. He had a deep love of all things from Mississippi in general and especially his beloved bulldogs. He was a gregarious and generous individual who will be missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard N. and Mary Read Stovall Harbison.
Billy is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ann Murdock Harbison; children, Murdock Ann Harbison of Pensacola, Florida, Amee Burgoyne and her husband, Bob, of McClain, Virginia, and Rev. W. Scott Harbison and his wife, Debbie of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Riker Vermilye, Katelyn, Cassie and Olivia Harbison as well as his brother, the Rev. Dr. Richard T. Harbison of Lynchburg, Virginia and his wife Barbara; and many friends and family members.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.
