John Everett Wendel, 67, of Lansing, Kan. went to his heavenly home Monday, October 14, 2013 at St. John Hospital, with his family by his side. He was born to the late Arnold and Mabel Wendel on December 18, 1945 in Leavenworth. John graduated from Lansing High School in 1963. He attended Pittsburg State University. He was married to the love of his life Mary Lee Wendel in 1965. They lived in Lansing, Kan.
John was a Banker at Citizens Savings and Loan for 27 years. He was often a help to many who needed a friend, a mentor or a willing hand to help everyone. So many lives have been touched by his loving and generous nature.
John was an active member of High Prairie Church and loved singing in the choir. He was a founding member and 1st president of the Lansing Kiwanis Club. He also served as the Lieutenant Governor for the Kansas State Kiwanis Division 2. He was a member of the Goldwing Association, Leavenworth Cruisers, Good Guy's Car Club, Shriner in the Escorts, and Treasurer of the Lansing School Board as well as Delaware Water District. He was a member of the Leavenworth-Lansing Chamber of Commerce and the Nine Mile Masonic Lodge. He served on three scholarship committees for Lansing High School.
John is Survived by his wife Mary of 48 years together, his brother Bill Wendel (wife Glenda), sister Jessie Higgens (husband Terry), two children Monica Wagner (husband Shawn) Tom Wendel (Stephanie Brown), five grandchildren, Paul and Luke Wagner and Katlyn, Justin and Emmalee Wendel.
In living his life he was always the example others strived to be like. He loved riding his motorcycle, fixing antique cars, creating wood treasures. His family was his greatest treasure.
Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m.,Friday, October 18, 2013 at High Prairie Church, 26480 187th St, Leavenworth, KS 66048. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the church. Burial will follow in the Mt. Muncie Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to be made to High Prairie Church or the John Wendel Scholarship Fund in care of Davis Funeral Chapel, 531 Shawnee St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
