Lewis Henry Ackerman, 88, of Freeport died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at FHN Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Lewis was born March 21, 1922, in German Valley, the son of John and Lena (Mustert) Ackerman. On March 12, 1948, Lewis married Dorothy Cook in Belvidere.

Lewis farmed near German Valley and worked for Fairbanks-Morse. He later owned and operated Ackerman Heating & Air Conditioning.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, a former member of Golden K Kiwanis more than 20 years, a volunteer worker for both FACC and Meals on Wheels, and also enjoyed bowling, golf and card games.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Freeport; son, Charles (Claire) Ackerman of Perrysburg, Ohio; daughter, Barb (Mike) O'Grady of Ridott; seven grandchildren, Jon (fiancée, Brooke) Ackerman and Ben Ackerman, both of Sterling, Va., Carmen Alkire of Perrysburg, Ohio, Megan (Mike) Reading of Blanchardville, Wis., Nichole (Chris) Bauscher of Freeport, Riley (Brandy) O'Grady of Hailey, Idaho, and Melissa (DeJuan Smith) O'Grady of Las Vegas, Nev.
Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Jayln Carr, MiYanni Smith and Hudson Lewis Bauscher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Henrietta Wichman and Hattie Suess; brother-in-law, Bob Cook; and his wife's parents.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at First Lutheran Church, 303 S. Galena Ave., Freeport, with the Rev. Keith Johnson and Chaplain Don Swanson officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Oakland Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. Friends also may call from 10 a.m. Saturday to time of service at the church.

A memorial fund has been established for FACC and First Lutheran Church in his memory.
