Joseph Seltzer grew up in Brownville, Brooklyn, and later lived in Brighton Beach. He and his twin Lillian were the youngest of four children of Sam and Mary Seltzer, Jewish immigrants from what is now Belarus.

Joe enlisted on Nov. 28, 1942, and served in the U.S. Army's 306th Infantry Regiment, part of the 77th Infantry Division. His serial number was 32647281.

Joe died in Ie Shima, Japan, of wounds suffered in the Battle of Okinawa. He was first buried in Japan, then "repatriated" to the U.S. in March 1949. He is buried alongside other fallen soldiers on the grounds of the International Workers Order.
