James Paul Chaplin, 85, was born April 1, 1927 to the late Frank and Catherine Chaplin on St. Helena Island, SC.

He received his formal education at South Pine School and Penn Normal School on St. Helena Island, SC. Mr. Chaplin later joined the United States Navy, where he traveled to Maryland, California, Alaska and Seattle gaining advanced training in mine sweeping, how to transport ships and shake down tactics. He later went to fight in the Battles of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and the Battle of Okinawa in Japan, March of 1945, where he stayed until the end of WWII. Mr Chaplin earned a Bronze Battle Star for serving in WWII. His picture of honor is on the South Carolina Heroes Wall at the Ralph H. Johnson Veteran Hospital. He retired from Civil Service after 42 years.

He was an active member of Orange Grove Baptist Church since 1949, where he served as President of the Usher Board and Trustee for 15 years, until his health failed. He was a member of the Young Man Social Club and Masonic Lodge. He was very devoted to serving others and a loving husband, father, brother and friend.

He joined in Holy Matrimony to Mary Agnes Chaplin and to this union two children were born. After the passing of the Late Mary Agnes Chaplin, he later met and married Esther M. Singleton-Chaplin. Both preceded him in death, including two sisters, Idelle Sumpter and Julia Williams.

On Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 10:06am, God called James P. Chaplin home to eternal rest at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

He leaves to cherish fond memories: two daughters, Christena S. Porter of St. Helena Island, SC and Barbara Chisolm of New York; son Carl Jerrold Sampson and to include children that are reared as his own, Romenia (David) Oliver of Arizona, Marietta Singleton of New York, Gloria Singleton of Beaufort, SC, Henrietta Singleton of New York, Karen Singleton of Charleston, SC, Vanessa (Irvin) of Seattle, WA, Robert (Richardean) Singleton of Beaufort, SC and Rodney (Edna) Singleton of Beaufort; two brothers, Hosea (Margaret) Chaplin and Henry Chaplin; grandchildren, Shannon E. Porter, Stephen P.H. Porter, Lakisha Graham, Nicholas Chisholm, Sammora Chisholm, Zion Keith, Heather, Jessica and Jamie Sampson; great grandchildren, Brandon C. Porter, Jordan Porter, Christopher J. Porter, Jalin, Jerome and Janiyah Porter; sisters-in-law, Helen Marie Jefferson, Viola Sampson and Rachel (Ben) Freeman; brother-in-law, William Sampson; special friends, Joseph Boyle, Mary Doctor, Wendy Daise Ina Lawson and Alice Johnson; special son, Joseph (Liza) Mack; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.




Funeral service was 11am Monday, March 18, 2013 at Orange Grove Baptist Church on St. Helena Island, SC. Burial at Beaufort National Cemetery with honors. Allen Funeral Home of Beaufort in charge of arrangements.
