Joseph F. Rosenfield married Johanna McNeil on April 12, 1868, in Rock Island, IL. Johanna died shortly after child birth in 1877. Joseph then married Mary Ellen Burns on February 12, 1878. On April 8, 1879, Joseph and Ellen had a son, Joseph F. Rosenfield, born to their union. Joseph never met his son!

On March 12, 1879, Rock Island Patrolman Joseph Rosenfield was beaten to death while attempting to disperse a group of rowdy men on the corner of 18th Street and 6th Avenue at 1:00 am.

When Patrolman Rosenfield approached John Cavanaugh, Bernard & Patrick Heeney, and Thomas Ross; he was attacked and beaten to death. The men were all apprehended and punished for their crimes.

The Funeral was held on March 14, 1879, in Rock Island, Illinois. The Procession began at 8:30 am starting at The Armory; Leading the march were the Police Depts. of Rock Island, Moline, & Davenport; the Fire Depts, Rodman's Rifles, City Council, County Board of Supervisors to the Rosenfield Family Home and ending at St. Josephs Church. Burial at Calvary Cemetery.
