Alexander G. Fotiades, 87, of Marstons Mills, died Friday, October 18th at home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rita (Andreopoulos) Fotiades; his son, James A. Fotiades and his wife, Jennifer of Charlestown; two daughters, Alexandra Fotiades of Marlborough and Dianne Fotiades of Northborough; his granddaughter, Christen Vienneau and her husband, John and their daughter, Ava of Northborough and many nephews and nieces.

He was born in Worcester, the son of George M. and Mary (Laurence) Fotiades. Alex left Commerce High School in 1944 to serve in the U.S. Naval Air Division. Upon his return he graduated from Worcester State College, now known as Worcester State University on the GI Bill. Most recently Alex was inducted into the Worcester State University Sports Hall of Fame for starting the first basketball team. In 1951 Alex enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, graduating as Lieutenant from the Officer Candidate School in Quantico, VA and then served during the Korean War.

Alex worked in the beverage industry for the Narragansett Brewing Company for more than 20 years. He later retired from Burke Distributing Corp. as General Sale's manager/Vice President. He was a Steward of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Hyannis.

Alex's granddaughter summed it up best. "He was honest, strong, loving and charismatic. Not to be compared to anyone else in the world. He was so amazing and independent minded. He always knew how to make someone feel special and he gave the best advice. He worked his whole life to make sure his family was safe, happy and healthy."

His funeral will be held Wednesday, October 23rd at 11:00 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, October 22nd in O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
