He resigned on 10/2/1862 on basis of "twenty negroe clause"; accepted twice: 10/27/1862 and 11/6/1862.
He was enlisted in Fauquier County on 11/10/1864 by Walter E. Frankland of (Mosby's) 43rd Battalion Cavalry for the duration of the war and mustered into Company F as a Private.
On 12/10/1864 Inspection Roll.
Paroled 4/22/1865 Winchester, VA.
Postwar he was Superintendant of Schools of Fredericksburg; Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge, No. 4, officer (S.); Fredericksburg Masonic Royal Arch Chapter, No. 23 of Masons, officer (S.); Fredericksburg Masonic Consistory, No. 8 of Masons, officer (I. G. S. and K. of S. & A.); insurance agent, office at 302 Commerce Street above Princess Anne Street; lived at 1202 Prince Edward Street, at the corner of Lewis; married to Elizabeth; daughters: Margaret, Mercer.
Mosby's Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 43rd Battalion, was organized in December, 1864. The battalion was formed in June, 1863, with five companies, later increased to eight. The unit served behind Federal lines in Northern Virginia and was the most effective command of its kind. The enemy forces were never safe and the area became known as "Mosby's Confederacy".
