During World War II George served his country in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator on a B-17 Flying Fortress in the 8th Air Force in England. George spend the last twenty years before retirement in sales at John M Smyth Furniture Store in Chicago, IL. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member for 73 years prior to his death. He became a Shriner in 1960. In 1977 he joined the SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America) while living in Homewood, IL in 1977 and became a Charter/Founding member of the Placerville chapter, The Gold Rush Chorus after moving there.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Blanche Spanos, and three sisters, Mary, Jeane and Donna Louise. His wife, Elizabeth, did not last long after George's death. She died 6 weeks later, December 10, 2013.
