Richard "Dick" Bates
Richard "Dick" Bates, son of George and Mary Bates, passed away peacefully at home on September 11, 2006 at the age of 86. Dick was born in Portland, Oregon, but lived in Olympia for over 60 years. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, Dick met and married Betty Winslow; they just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Dick worked for the Operating Engineers for 30 years, and was quick to say that at the end of each day he could turn around with pride and see exactly what he had accomplished. Dick is survived by his daughter, Patty Dustin; twin sons, Denny and Mike Bates; grandchildren, Amy Clifford, Kerry Anne Davidson, Kimberly Beadle, Michelle Paulsen, Damian Bates, and Amanda Bates; seven great-grandchildren; and the second love of his life, his cat "Snoops". At Dick's request, there will be no service. Contributions may be made in his name to Providence SoundHomeCare and Hospice of Olympia.
