During Civil War, served in Company D, 13th Regiment South Carolina Volunteers. Enlisted August 23, 1861 in Newberry, South Carolina. He caught typhoid fever in December 1861 and became partially paralized. He was discharged in Charleston, South Carolina on January 31, 1862.

When Newton Frederick Butler was born on February 8, 1838, in Newberry County, South Carolina, his father, Rhesa, was 39 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 35. He married Mary V. (Mollie) Watts on July 19, 1862, in Newberry County, South Carolina. They had seven children in 15 years. In 1880 he was a school teacher in Newberry, SC. He died on December 5, 1905, at the age of 67.
