John Walter Bryant was born on November 30, 1862 in Dickson County, Tennessee, the son of Benjamin Franklin Bryant (1840-1922) and Fredonia A (Reynolds) Bryant (1840-1906). {It is noted that his Death Certificate has his middle name as Walter, while his original obituary has it as William.}

He was married on October 18, 1885 in Dickson County to Mary Nancy G Lewis (1866-1930), the daughter of Jasper Napoleon Lewis (1845-1914) and Mary Ann (Givens) Lewis (ca 1846- ).

John was a member of Primitive Baptist Church on Barton's Creek and was a long-time farmer in the Shiloh Community. He was almost 84 years old when he had a heart attack and passed away on October 22, 1946 in at the home of his son Luther Bryant in Montgomery County.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife, while survivors included daughters Fannie (Bryant) Coleman and Rubie (Bryant) Lyle, son Luther Bryant, sisters Hettie (Bryant) Edwards and Mary (Bryant) Ferrell, brothers Jim Bryant, Ben Bryant, George Bryant, Sam Bryant, Tom Bryant and Dillard Bryant, eighteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Graveside Services were held in [Ben] Bryant Cemetery near Marion.
