VALDESE, N.C. — Mrs. Leona Barefield Dickens, 89, of Valdese, went to her Heavenly Home on Sunday, September 15, 2013, after a period of declining health.
Mrs. Dickens was born January 25, 1924, in Raleigh County, WV, to the late George Barefield and Julia Maynor Barefield.
She was a member for 60 years of the Pentecostal Church of God in Alpoca, WV, and retired as a Nurses Aide from the Wyoming General Hospital. Leona was known as a strong and caring person to her family and friends and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Linville Dickens, a son, Ronald Dickens, two infant children, two brothers, Orville and Robert Barefield, and four sisters, Francis Martin, Cora Moles, Virginia Workman and Lucille Hudson.
She is survived by two sons, Randall Dickens (Cindy) of Mt. Hope, WV, Clarence Dickens (Shelia) of Beckley, WV, seven daughters, Carol Maltba (Gary) of Lenoir, Melba Elkins (Randy) of Hudson, Rose Adams of Valdese, Tena Sizemore (Kevin) of Morganton, Donna Bowling (Billy) of Hildebran, Tammy Isom of Hickory, and Rita Jordan (Tracy) of Taylorsville, and one foster daughter, Emma Polly of Vero Beach, FL. Also surviving are twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Leona B. Dickens will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese, with Rev. Allen King officiating.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.
A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, WV, with her grandsons serving as pallbearers.
