Deaths
Departed this life on the morning of Saturday the 14th inst. at his residence in this place, Mr. James A. Trimble, at an advancd age.
He was the second brother in succession to Gov. Allen Trimble and had been identified with Ohio and the county for a period of more than sixty years; and was, therefore, among the earliest pioneers of this, then wild and wilderness country, recently the home of the Indians, who were even then among the hills and valleys of Clear Creek, where his father, Capt. James Trimble first made a settlement in 1803.
His son, James A., the subject of this memoir, then a youth of sixteen, accompanied him from Kentucky and spent that year in building a cabin and planting an orchard on the farm which he lately occupied, near Hillsboro.
Mr. Trimble was a native of Woodford county, Ky., and was born near Versailles in February 1788. His active and useful life was spent in Highland County as a farmer and business man, in a plain, practical and unobtrusive manner, pursuing the even tener of his way with the confidence and respect of his fellow citizens.
In the War with England of 1812, he was with three of his brothers, a volunteer in the campaign of 1813. As a merchant, was with a surviving brother, an active trader and shipper of produce to New Orleans for many years. He retired to the farm, his mother's and family homestead in 1832 and a few years after, was married to Miss Ann E. Shields of Chillicothe; whose death preceded his some eight years. He had no family.
Late in life he made profession of his religious faith and became a member of the Presbyterian Church of Hillsborough.
His health had been gradually failing for several years and confined him closely to his residence, and his lingering days of sickness, prostration and decline were soothed by the kind attention of relatives and friends.
He died with a full consciousness of his approaching end, peacefully and with the humble faith and hope of the Christian.
His funeral took place in the evening of the 16th inst. at the Presbyterian Church and was largely attended to his last resting place at the cemetery.
The religious services were performed by Rev. Dr. Steel assisted by Rev. Mr. Matthews and with a suitable tribute to his memory and worth as a Christian and estimable citizen.
