Hazel Helen Beckerdite

Hazel Helen Beckerdite, age 86, passed away Friday, November 18, 2000 in Santa Paula. She was predeceased by her husband, Cord Beckerdite.

Hazel was born September 13, 1914 in Jefferson, Missouri. She and her husband Cord moved to Santa Paula in 1944.

Hazel grew up on a farm in Fairgrove, Missouri, where she enjoyed a happy childhood with devoted Christian parents who served the Lord with gladness, often reaching out to others with love and compassion. She met her husband Cord when they were teenagers, as she picked berries from his parents' farm. Love was beginning to blossom, but the final harvest of marriage was several years later. They were happily married for 58 years. Cord was an employee of Texaco Oil for many years.

Hazel had many fond memories of being a school teacher in Missouri in a one-room schoolhouse, which taught grades 1-12. She had always loved children, and was faithful to keep her cookie jar filled for all of the neighborhood kids. They rewarded her with artwork for her refrigerator and many hugs.

She also worked as the bookkeeper for both the Mupu and Briggs packing houses in Santa Paula in earlier years. Hazel was always cheerful and optimistic, and had a great sense of humor.

Hazel was known as "the flower lady" because of her green thumb, and her yard was a delight to behold. She was also an avid reader, and was known for her delicious down-home cooking. Pass the ham hocks and beans if you please.

Hazel is survived by [names omitted for privacy]. She was a loving and devoted mother and will be greatly missed by those around her.

[more survivors' names omitted]

Hazel had been a member of the Santa Paula First Baptist Church since 1944. She loved the Lord and served Him faithfully all these years. We know that she is in heaven now, rejoicing with Him.
