Nathaniel Brittain was born to William and Mary (Collins) Brittain in Amwell Twp., Pennsylvania. He married Jane Simonton about 1769 and they were the parents of Samuel, R.B, William, Mary, Elizabeth, Robert, Jane, Sarah, Nathaniel and John. He died on October 2, 1817.

Like many families, the Revolution split the children of William and Mary into two camps. Three of their sons were Loyalists and fought for the crown during the Revolution while the other 3 sons fought for the colonies.
