Shirley Ann (Cowlan) Sommers December 1, 1944 – July 16, 2013, God called today, His love for you Shirley ever present. It was indeed time for you to enter your heavenly home and enjoy rest and lasting peace. Daughter of the late Charles & Elizabeth (Reynolds) Cowlan, loving sister and best friend to Joyce Cowlan. Loving devoted wife and life partner of James Sommers. Mother of Carol (David) Coulson, Donna (Chester) Blackburn, Betty (Ronald) Zarling and Lynn (Jarrod) Kind. Grandmother of Alisha Talbot, Taylor & Danon Coulson, Stephanie Blackburn, James, Matthew & Brianna Zarling, the late Nicole Zarling, Jadeyn & Kailey Kind. Great grandmother of Phoebe Talbot. Shirley was born and raised in Peterborough, England. Graduating from the British education system, Shirley was employed by a leading toy manufacturer in Peterborough. God brought together Shirley and a young man serving in the United States Air Force, a match only God could create. Marriage and the bond that followed became the foundation of faith, family and life for the young couple. Shirley and Jim were married in Peterborough, England on December 19, 1968. Shirley and Jim arrived in America on July 3, 1970 and began raising their family in Kiel. Shirley enjoyed providing childcare, spending many hours creating special projects for the children to make for their parents. Shirley also enjoyed the part-time work she did for Household Utilities, Inc in Kiel. Shirley's life encompassed care and love, always more concerned about others and their needs. Through all the years faced with several different cancers, kidney failure and a multitude of health issues, she never gave up; always putting her husband, family and others at the top of her concerns. Shirley's faith, strength and courage have truly been an inspiration to all who knew her. Of the many interests Shirley enjoyed, it was her many plants, roses and flowers that provided so much joy. She had a very special love for orchids, a hobby that was inspired by Dr. Barylak. Sewing, knitting, crotcheting and cross-stitch found their way into many projects for family and friends. Shirley was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Kiel and a former Sunday school teacher who enjoyed helping in God's service. Our sincere appreciation to Linda Breckheimer for the continued friendship, concern and support she has always provided Shirley. Thank you also to Dorothy Schnell for all your thoughtfulness. Funeral services for Shirley will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 6th St. Kiel with Chaplain Marianne Brandt officiating. Burial will take place in the Kiel City Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of service. Shirleys family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Edward J. Barylak and the Staff of Aurora Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic, Two Rivers, Dr. Qamar U. Qazi and the entire Davita Manitowoc dialysis team along with the many patients and friends that have enriched their lives.
