Ferdinand and his wife, Minnie worked for a large landowner in Germany before coming to America. Ferdinand drove the horses and Minnie and the rest of the family worked in the fields. They arrived in America in 1881. A descendant of Ferdinand* informs me that he changed his name to "Franz" when he served in the army for fear that the military would come after him and he sent his family over first because he was afraid they would not allow his family to come over at a later time.
