Thomas Brewer Benson was my second great-grandfather. He was born January 22, 1849 in Macon, Georgia. He was the second child born to his parents Catherine Elizabeth Brewer and Richard Aaron Benson.

Thomas Brewer Benson died at an early age. He was married to Wesleyan College graduate Hattie Eliza Freeman. They had two young daughters, Lula May Benson and Mamie Shepherd Benson.

Death of his father Richard Aaron Benson. Thomas Brewer Benson predeceased his parents.

Tom's brother Admiral William Shepherd Benson was the highest ranking officer in the United States Navy. Admiral Benson remained close to Tom's daughters.

Tom's sister Gertrude married Henry Clay Arnall, grandfather of Ellis Gibbs Arnall, 69th Governor of Georgia. As his widow, Aunt Gertrude lived to see her husband's grandson become Georgia's most progressive governor in history. Tom's daughters knew the Arnall family.

Aspinwall cousin and family friend Franklin Delano Roosevelt was Assistant Secretary of the Navy when Rear Admiral Benson was made first Chief of Naval Operations, a position created for him by Josephus Daniels. Following this appointment, William Shepherd Benson reported only to Secretary of the Navy Daniels and to Assistant Secretary Roosevelt. There was no officer above Benson's rank at this point in his career.

FDR spent much time in Georgia before becoming President of the United States of America. Ellis Gibbs Arnall was at this time a brash young attorney who didn't shy from representing workers, even representing employees of his grandfather's company Arnall Mills. Arnall's mentor and great-uncle (by marriage to his grandfather's sister) Judge Alvan Dean Freeman had family in Vineville, where they knew Tom Brewer and his family as neighbors.

Tom Benson was a grandson of Massachusetts natives Thomas Aspinwall Brewer and Mary Foster Brewer Brewer of Vineville, Bibb County, Georgia.

Tom's paternal grandparents were Eliza Jane Jappie Benson Scott of Vineville, originally of New York, and her late husband Aaron Benson of Georgia. Eliza's father was from Ireland. Aaron Benson, believed to have come to Georgia from Maryland, is said to be a son of James Benston. According to Tom's brother Shepherd Benson (known as Admiral William Shepherd Benson), the Benston or Benson family was from Isle of Wight in Virginia, and originally from England.

Excepting his Irish heritage, all ancestors of Thomas Brewer Benson were from England. The earlier known ancestors were the ruling families of Europe who became the English royal family. Thomas Brewer Benson has a royal and noble ancestry, and thus has French and other extensive European lineages which are documented and accepted by historians and professional genealogists as completely certain and accurate.

Thomas Brewer Benson married Hattie Eliza Freeman. She was a daughter of Charles Henry Freeman and his wife Hannah Lum, both originally of New Jersey.

Thomas Brewer Benson and Hattie Eliza Freeman had two children, Lula May Benson and Maria Shepherd Benson.

Thomas Brewer Benson's younger sister Gertrude later in life was married, as his second wife, to Henry Clay Arnall, grandfather of Ellis Gibbs Arnall, 69th Governor of Georgia.

Georgia was an important agricultural component in America's effort to become independent of foreign goods and markets. The railroad was important to both the local economy and to the economic development of Georgia. Additionally, the railroad afforded new opportunity for trade and travel, both of which impacted the entire nation.

Thomas Brewer Benson worked for the railroad industry. He was a railway conductor. This was probably his job when he died.

Thomas Brewer Benson was the second child and first son born to Richard Aaron Benson and Catherine Elizabeth Brewer Benson.

Catherine Elizabeth Brewer Benson was known as "Bess" to her family. Bess, born 1822 in Augusta, Georgia, was the eldest child of Thomas Aspinwall Brewer and his wife Mary Foster Brewer Brewer. Thomas Aspinwall Brewer and Mary Foster Brewer were second cousins. Both are directly descended from Elizabeth Mayo and Nathaniel Brewer III. An additional shared ancestry is the Weld family of Massachusetts. Obviously each line includes further shared ancestors (wives and their ancestors are ancestors also).

Thomas Brewer Benson was twice a descendant of Reverend Thomas Weld, son of Edmund Weld and Amye. Thomas Brewer Benson was also a direct descendant of Captain Joseph Weld, son of Edmund Weld and Amye and brother of Reverend Thomas Weld. By bloodlines and marriages (extended family), Thomas Aspinwall Brewer and Mary Foster Brewer Brewer shared countless family ties – both historic and contemporary to their own lives and generation.

Reverend Samuel Whiting and his first wife are ancestors of both Thomas Aspinwall Brewer and Mary Foster Brewer. Additionally, Reverend Samuel Whiting and Elizabeth St John are ancestors of Thomas Aspinwall Brewer - bringing Thomas Brewer Benson three lines from Reverend Samuel Whiting plus one line from Elizabeth St John, second wife of Reverend Samuel Whiting.

Weld
Edmund Weld and Amye
Reverend Thomas Weld and Margaret
Thomas Weld and Dorothy Whiting
Margaret Weld and Nathaniel Brewer
Nathaniel Brewer III and Elizabeth Mayo
- both Thomas Aspinwall Brewer and Mary Foster Brewer were direct descendants of the above named persons. STEPHEN BREWER
married Susanna White. JOSEPH BREWER married Rebeckah Weld. Thomas Aspinwall Brewer was a descendant of Stephen; and Mary Foster Brewer a descendant of Joseph (Stephen's brother). The additional Weld line is because Joseph Brewer married Rebeckah Weld, his distant cousin (both Joseph and Rebeckah being descended from Edmund Weld and Amye). Rebeckah and Joseph are ancestors of Mary Foster Brewer, and Joseph Brewer is a Weld in the Brewer line also. Thus this one line to Nathaniel Brewer III and then the marriage of Joseph to Rebeckah Weld provides three lines from Reverend Samuel Whiting, two lines from Daniel Brewer, and three lines from Edmund Weld and Amye, plus additionalshared ancestors.

Other ancestors on the side of Thomas Aspinwall Brewer include St John-Whiting, Danforth-Whiting, Newman-Sparhawk, Whiting-Sparhawk, Oliver-Sparhawk, and Sparhawk-Aspinwall - Catharine Sparhawk Aspinwall married Edward Brewer which unites several shared ancestries into their son Thomas Aspinwall Brewer. When Thomas Aspinwall Brewer marries his Brewer cousin Mary Foster Brewer, further shared ancestries unite into their daughter Catherine Elizabeth Brewer (Mrs. Richard Aaron Benson). This is the Massachusetts ancestry of Thomas Brewer Benson.

Twice a descendant of John "The Scholar" Oliver, Harvard College 1645. Member, Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston. Elizabeth Oliver, daughter of John The Scholar, married Enoch Wiswall. Captain Thomas Oliver, son of John "The Scholar" Oliver, married twice, Mary Wilson being ancestor of Thomas Brewer Benson. Mary Olver, daughter of Nathaniel Oliver and Bethia Hyde, married Hon. Thomas Sparhawk of Cambridge who was also her appointed guardian following the death of Nathaniel her father. Tom's father Richard Aaron Benson had Irish and Maryland/Virginia ancestors. Tom's wife Hattie Eliza Freeman had English/New Jersey and colonial New York ancestors.

Thomas Aspinwall Brewer and Mary Foster Brewer Brewer first removed from Massachusetts to Augusta, Georgia, and then to Lexington, Georgia. The couple next settled in Vineville, nearby to Macon, in Bibb County, Georgia, where they built their home circa about 1830 (pictured).

Thomas Brewer Benson, father of Lula May Benson and Mamie Shepherd Benson, was born in 1849. His wife Hattie Eliza Freeman Benson was born May 30, 1853, in Macon. Hattie died in 1879. Thomas died in 1880, aged 31 years, leaving two young daughters. Thomas had been a railroad conductor, at the time an important job and one which often was a step to higher management. Many of the family's associates were railroad executives. It is not known what further career Thomas Brewer Benson might have had because he died early. Tom's wife Hattie Eliza predeceased him. Thus, he was survived only by his mother, his siblings, and his two young daughters.

In 1896, Tom and Hattie's daughter, Lula May Benson, was married to Connecticut native Nelson Huntley Parker, Sr.

Mamie Shepherd Benson was married to Van Porter Enloe, Sr. of Senoia, Coweta County, Georgia, after 1918. Van's children were reared by Mamie, and are from her husband's first marriage to Vallie V. Payne Enloe.

Admiral William Shepherd Benson
Thomas Brewer Benson's younger brother William Shepherd Benson was known as "Shepherd" to his family. Admiral Benson was educated at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He was the first Chief of Naval Operations and worked closely alongside Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, for much of this stage in his career. He and Roosevelt had family in common, including the Aspinwall lineage and also a Brewer connection. Admiral Benson converted to the Catholic faith and helped to found a Catholic school for African-American pupils in Maryland, which is also where he and wife Mary Augusta Wyse lived. Admiral Benson for much of his earlier career was at sea, and later was responsible for developing the Merchant Marines and United States Shipping Board. Known as both courtly in manner and incredibly modest – a true gentleman, Admiral Benson remained highly respected throughout his life. He had a happy marriage and died in 1932, having also remained in contact with the family of his late brother Tom (Thomas Brewer Benson).

Map of the Old Planters 1000 Acre Grant of 1635
by Robert S. Raymond
Some of the earliest men to "plant" settlements on the North Shore of Massachusetts Bay were Roger Conant, John Woodbery, William Trask, John Balch, and Peter Palfrey. The arrival of new colonists and a new governor from the New England company for a Plantation in Massachusetts Bay in 1628 resulted in contention between these "old planters" and the new settlers. The New England company strove to integrate them into the new community. On the 25th of November 1635, a grant of 1000 acres was made to the five old planters mentioned, probably in recognition of their early contributions.

Three of these planters, Conant, Woodbery, and Balch, settled on the grant. Palfrey sold his share to William Dodge and Trask's grant passed to Thomas Scruggs.
