José Ignacio Lugo y Martínez was born at Mission San Luís Obisbo, Alta California, New Spain, where he was baptized January 8, 1775 (SLO Baptism 00096). He enlisted as a soldado de cuera ("leather jacket") at the Presidio of Santa Bárbara about 1793 and was posted to Mission San Juan Bautista. He returned to the Presidio of Santa Bárbara where he married María Rafaela Romero y Salgado* in the Presidio Chapel June 13, 1800 (BP Marriage 00043). He was posted to Mission San Fernando where he served as Mayordomo in 1817. José Ignacio Lugo appears on the roster of the Presidio of Santa Bárbara as an invalido (retired soldier) in 1832. Soon thereafter he relocated to Los Angeles where he died in August 1846 and was buried in the cemetery of the Los Angeles Plaza Church (Bancroft, PR iv, pg 720).

* María Rafaela Romero y Salgado was born at Loreto, Baja California [Sur], in 1774. She was the daughter of cabo (coporal )Juan María Romero and María Salgado (both born Loreto). María Rafaela married soldado José Ignacio Lugo y Martínez in the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel on June 13, 1800 (BP Marriage 00043). She died in Los Angeles County in 1874.

María Magdalena de Jesús Lugo y Romero was born at Santa Bárbara on May 11, 1804 and baptized in the Presidio Chapel two days later (BP Baptism 00278). She married William Wolfskill in the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel on January 12, 1841 (BP Marriage 00233). María died at Los Angeles July 5, 1862, and was buried in (Old) Calvary Catholic Cemetery. After it was condemned her son Joseph William Wolfskill had her remains transferred to the Wolfskill plot in New Calvary Cemetery to rest beside her husband.
