In Loving Memory of Walter Willis Wells...

Son of Samuel Bruce Wells and Ada Margaret Stone. He was a house carpenter. It appears he never married.

Mendocino County Death certificate information needed.

January 3, 1901, edition of the Press Democrat newspaper.

"The Inquest Held - Jury Makes Formal Murder Charge - Beaten to Death - Main in Custody - Admits That He Wielded Club - A Fracas On Adams Street on Tuesday Night in Which a Man's Skull Was Fractured.

The article was about the murder of an Indian, who was beaten over the head with a bat. Walter was a witness to the assault and was called upon to testify. The article reads:

"A youth named Walter Wells, who testified that most everybody called him "Turkey" Wells was sworn as a witness. He told the jury that on Tuesday night he was in Battaglia's barroom, and after talking with the deceased, borrowed a dime from him. With the dime, he bought some beverage and was carrying it away in a can when Brush (the deceased) essayed to follow him. Then two or three men got hold of Brush (the deceased) and threw him out. The witness (Walter) said that he did not know who the bouncers were, neither did he see any one stuck. At the time, the witness remembered the deceased ask him if he had a knife."

Received this very helpful info on May 8, 2014 via e-mail from Sandy Frary with the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery (updating their burial book).

Sandy Frary has listed Walter's name along with his mother Ada and half brother Fred Higgins as being buried under the broken wooden marker in the Outer Circle in the Stanley Section of the Rural Cemetery. She decided to check the Rural Cemetery Burial Listing records back to 1987, and found that all three have always been shown as being buried together. She believes that 27 years ago, the wooden marker hadn't yet been vandalized and that all three names could be read.
