PFC US ARMY WORLD WAR II

Born April 9, 1926 in Stony Creek, he was the son of DeWitt and Grace (Chave) Tremaine. He was a 1944 graduate of Warrensburg High School. During his senior year of high school, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, DeWitt attended Skidmore College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1952.

He married June Carbery on Feb. 18, 1956 in Stony Creek. They lived in the home they built from the timber on their land and called their home, “Logamour Lodge.”

DeWitt had worked at several occupations: for his parents at Thunder Mountain Resort in Stony Creek, as a chemist at Imperial in Hudson Falls, as an engineer at F.M. Charleton Bookbinding in New York, N.Y., and was a science and math teacher at Stratford Central School, Stratford, N.Y.

He then was the assessor for the town of Stony Creek, and was former town supervisor. He was a charter member and a 50-year member of the Stony Creek Fire Co. He was a handyman and caretaker of many summer homes and camps.

He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Dawn Carroll; and a brother, Orlin Tremaine.
