Pastor Jerry is survived by his wife, Joyce Padgett Holcomb, his daughter, Victoria Holcomb Murrish and grandson, Garrett Murrish, all of Virginia Beach, VA; his brother, Michael Holcomb and wife Janis of Lilburn, GA; and niece Michelle Holcomb Locker also of Lilburn, GA.
Pastor Jerry confessed his faith at a young age and was baptized when he was nine years old. He graduated from Toccoa High School in 1958. He spent his freshman and sophomore college years at Young Harris College, in Young Harris, GA. In July of 1962, he began his service to the Fishing Creek Baptist Church in Washington, GA. He was ordained as a Baptist Minister of the Gospel on October 21, 1962.
Pastor Jerry graduated from the University of Georgia in 1963. An avid sports fan he became a life-long devotee of the UGA's sports teams, the Bulldogs. At 6'2" tall with the sturdy frame of a football player, he looked like he might have been a lineman for the Bulldogs. The UGA teams were so important to him that his email address even made reference to the Bulldogs.
Pastor Jerry and Joyce moved to Wake Forest, NC to attend the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In September 1963, he was called to pastor Webb's Chapel Baptist Church in Macclesfield, NC. He graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree in 1967. He continued to pastor Webb's Chapel Baptist Church until he was called to King's Grant Baptist Chapel.
On June 2, 1968, he preached his first sermon as Pastor of King's Grant Baptist Chapel. Pastor Jerry led his congregation through their formative years, from a Chapel holding worship services in the cafeteria of Kingston Elementary School to the church officially constituted on October 5, 1969. He was proud of the fact that when he retired, the church was debt-free. More importantly he'd led hundreds of people to the Lord.
On June 17, 2007, Jerry retired as Pastor of King's Grant Baptist Church. In recognition of his long and distinguished service, he was awarded the title Pastor Emeritus.
Pastor Jerry Holcomb's accomplishments as a servant of the Lord are numerous and included: President of the Baptist General Association of VA in 1992; President of Norfolk Baptist Association in 1990, Trustee of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary 1983 - 1987; Trustee of Chowan University 1994-2002.
A celebration of Pastor Jerry's life will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 3, 2013, at King's Grant Baptist Church, 873 Little Neck Rd., Virginia Beach. The Rev. Cecil Chambers will officiate. A reception will follow in the church social hall. Interment in the church columbarium will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the King's Grant Baptist Church Benevolent Endowment Fund. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
