Walter Glen Andrews, Jr. (Slick) passed away peacefully on October 26, 2013. Slick is survived by his daughter, BJ Carpenter & her husband, Bill, of Lexington, KY; his son, Walt Andrews (Dub) & his wife, Jill, of Charlotte, NC; his grandson, Cea Carpenter & his wife, Jessica, of Lexington, KY; great granddaughter, Tori Carpenter, of Lexington, KY; and sister-in-law, Sue Andrews, of Fox, VA. Slick was born on October 29, 1921 in Kentucky. His wife, who predeceased him, was Fern Leftwich Andrews. His parents, who also predeceased him, were Walter G Andrews, Sr. & Anna Bagwell Andrews. He was the oldest of his two siblings, both of whom predeceased him, sister, Jody McCarter and brother, Linton Andrews. He graduated from his beloved Virginia Tech in 1943. Upon graduation he joined the Army and served as an Artillary Captain in the Pacific during WW II. He continued to serve his country through the Army Reserves until he retired as Lt. Colonel. Slick married Fern Leftwich on October 16, 1943, in El Paso, TX. Soon after he was shipped to the Pacific, and they would not see each other for over three years. When he returned from the war, they began their family on a dairy farm in Fox, VA. Slick started his automotive career in 1959. His career spanned over 40 years, beginning in Charlottesville, VA. He served as General Manager of Dominick Chevrolet (Charlottesville), White Chevrolet (Galax), Twin County Motor Company, which he later owned, (Galax), and Bob Huff Chevrolet (Wytheville). Slick was very active in civic clubs in Charlottesville and Galax. He served as President of the Lions Club, Grand Master of the Shriners, and was a Master Mason. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the following people: Hazel Montgomery, Lloyd Williams (grandson, Mark), Nancy and Charles Frangos, the late Paulette Hatfield, and Barbara Gaudet. These people showed true love and compassion to Slick & Fern for many years. Special thanks goes out to two of his nieces, Annabelle Forbes (Mike) and Robin Sykes (Tony) and his nephew, Dr. Dan McCarter, for the love and attention shown by them towards Fern & Slick. Additionally, our thanks go out to the staff of Wheatland Assisted Living and Waddell Nursing Home for the loving care given to him. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the First Methodist Church in Galax. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Vaughan Guynn. Burial will follow in Felts Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to the First Methodist Church in Galax.
