DUVAL, James Palmer Sr., age 81, was called by God into the Church Triumphant on October 28, 2013. Jim was a native Richmonder and the son of A. James Duval and Louise P. Duval.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ailene B. Duval; two sons, James P. Duval Jr. and his wife, Barbara B. Duval, and Dr. H. Edwin Duval and his wife, Dr. Catherine H. Duval; daughter, Jeanne Duval Hoy and her husband, R. Larry Hoy; six grandchildren, James P. Duval III, Laura Hoy Jenkins, Katherine Duval Henderson and her husband, Bobby, Geneva Ailene Duval, Alexander James Duval and Gordon Thomas Duval; and great-grandson, Tyler Wayne Jenkins. Jim is also survived by his brother, Robert C. Duval and his wife, Katherine B. Duval. Jim was very proud of all of his family and especially his grandchildren and great-grandson who held a high priority in his life schedule.
Mr. Duval was a graduate of St. Christopher's School and the University of Virginia with a degree in Chemical Engineering. At the University of Virginia, he was elected vice-president of the University Student Council and president of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa honorary leadership society, the IMP Society and the TILKA Society. Mr. Duval worked for Exxon Corporation in New Jersey for five years and for Allied Signal Corporation in Virginia as an Engineering Manager for 30 years before retiring in 1989. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army in Europe for two years in 1955 to 1957 monitoring the activities behind the Iron Curtain. He was assigned to the Army Security Agency in West Germany while stationed at Bad Aibling near Munich, West Germany, where his oldest son, Jim Jr., was born. He was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Bon Air for 53 years, where he served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister and as a former Sunday School Superintendent and Vestry Senior Warden. In the Diocese of Southern Virginia, he served as Lay Director of the Cursillo Secretariat and as a Cursillo Weekend Rector. He also served as Chair of the Companion Diocese Committee in the Leeward and Virgin Islands and as a member of the Diocesan Reconciliation Commission. He was a graduate of the Education For Ministry program of the School of Theology of the University of the South. Mr. Duval was a charter member of the Bon Air Rotary Club of Rotary International and served on the Board. He was honored by being named a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He served as president of the board of the Rag Mountain Estates Owners Association in Madison County, where he and his wife enjoyed owning a mountain retreat. He also served as president of the Board of The Bluffs Condominium in Bon Air where he lived. After his retirement, Jim and his wife enjoyed travel in this country and abroad and were privileged to visit many different countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England, Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Slovakia and Hungary. Jim also enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake Bay where he owned a boat for a number of years. He was an avid golfer playing several courses in the Richmond area on a regular basis.
His remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 8706 Quaker Lane, with a reception to follow. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Hollywood Cemetery, 412 S. Cherry St. No procession to cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either St. Michael's Episcopal Church or your favorite charity.
