Jewell Vernard "J.V." Wommack, Sr., 87, Bolivar, Missouri, passed away peacefully at 3:39 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, at Citizens Memorial Health Care Facility in Bolivar. J.V. was born August 7, 1930, to the late Jewell Sisco and Vesta Nowell Wommack and was an only child. As a result of his father's passing in 1937, he was left in the care of his mother's sister and brother-in-law, Enid Allen and Joe Martin, on their farm southwest of Bolivar. He continued to live and work on the farm, which helped form his important work ethic, with Joe and Enid (pop and mom), until he and Ruth Elaine Spurgeon eloped from Bolivar High School (at the ages of 16 and 17) to Eureka, Kansas, on January 24, 1947, where they were married and lived for two years.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, pop and mom, and his son, Jewell Vernard "Joey" Wommack, Jr.
In 1954, J.V. and Ruth purchased half interest in the Bolivar Memorial Company from Clint May and became partners with Bill Prope. In 1960, the remaining half interest was purchased and the name was changed to Wommack Monument Company, as it continues with second and third generation children and grandchildren today.
J.V. was very active in his beloved Bolivar and Polk County. Among his many interests, he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church, Polk County Republican Party Chairman, Bolivar City Council, Mayor of Bolivar 1961-63 and 1963-65, 32nd degree Mason and member of the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Temple in Springfield, Mo. As a Shriner, he took great pride in helping families receive care for their children at the Shriners Burns Institute and Crippled children's Hospital. He also served as a national board member of the Students in Free Enterprise (S.I.F.E.) Dad so enjoyed traveling with his wife and life partner, Ruth, golfing, model trains, "Whistling Navels", working in their yard, and was always available to help his family. He was a wonderful Christian example and instilled into the heads of his children and grandchildren that, "You never go wrong doing the right thing!" Dad never met a stranger and so cherished the many friendships he had both professionally and personally----he was well known for his great sense of humor and quick wit!
J.V. is survived by his loving and devoted wife Ruth Elaine Surgeon Wommack of Bolivar; son Brad and wife Leah Day Wommack of Bolivar; daughter-in-law Paula Marshall Wommack of Texas; grandson Justin and wife Tracey Wommack and daughter Megan and son Mason of Texas; grandson Eric and wife Christina Wommack and daughters Samantha and Sarah of Texas; granddaughter Julie Wommack Hartnett and daughters Skylar and Lily of Texas; granddaughter Lindsey Wommack Laird and husband Josh and daughter Keltey of Bolivar; granddaughter Malorie Wommack and fiancé Josh Samek and sons Gavyn and Dylan and daughter Kynlie of Bolivar; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation Monday, November 20, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Bolivar, Missouri. Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 21 at 11:00 a.m. preceded by a viewing at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church under the direction of Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home of Osceola, Missouri. Dr. Harlan Spurgeon and Pastor Billy Russell will be officiating. Music will be provided by Josh and Lindsey Wommack Laird, Samantha Wommack, Sarah Wommack, and Brad Wommack. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, immediately following the service
