He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, and he was married 1st in 1944 as the 1st husband of Elizabeth Ann (Howard) (Smith) Smatla (1921–2005). At the age of 50, Ralph was married 2nd on May 3, 1972 in Robertson County, Tennessee as the 2nd husband of Mildred "Ruth" (Trice) Pollock (1931-2011).
Living in Nashville, Ralph was 61 years old and married when he passed away on September 14, 1983.
Survivors included his wife Mildred in Nashville, a Smith daughter in Kansas City, Kansas, stepdaughter Mrs Rita Gayle Bryant and stepson Robert T Pollock Jr of Nashville, sisters Mrs Helen Kessler of Chicago, Illinois and Mrs Maurine Rowser and Mrs Florence Cook of Saint Petersburg, Florida.
Funeral Services were held at Broadway Chapel on September 16th, and burial was in Nashville National Cemetery, Madison, with Roesch Patton Dorris & Charlton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
