The first son of Charles Lummis and second wife, Eva Frances Douglas, a native of Connecticut, married in March, 1891, and divorced on June 13, 1912.Amado was named after his father's two good friends, Amado Chaves, whom Charles Lummis met during his tramp across the continent and where he enjoyed the Chaves family hospitality and later in life their friendship played a pivotal role in his recovery from paralysis, and also Adolph Bandelier, a man whom Lummis had several great expeditions with over the years.While Lummis was building the family home made of rocks, tiny Amado carried rocks from the Arroyo Seco and tamped mortar with his bare feet for the floors and walls.Amado died at the age of seven of pneumonia at El Alisal, also known as Lummis House. Watching his son be carried out the front door, Lummis never used the front door of the home again. It was said that Lummis never gotten over the death of Amado, his beloved gentle little boy with blond hair.
